Why has my computer screen suddenly blanked out?

I have a ViewSonic VX924 19" LCD computer monitor (mfg date: 10/2005) & a Diamond S60 32mb DDR Radeon 7000 AGP graphics card installed. Last night, without warning, the darn sceen suddenly went black and then started to flash to a viewable screen every other second. I turned the monitors' power off, waited a couple seconds, then turned it back on... but still kept getting the flashing screen (black/viewable) as well as a flashing green LED on the monitor. I quickly put my PC into 'sleep' mode, since i couldn't power down. I turned off my monitor & disconnected power, disconnected from my tower & powered down my PC. I reconnected everything... but to no avail! I'm still getting a flashing screen. I pulled out my old CRT & its working like a champ. I'm thinking my monitors' capacitors may have dried out and need to be replaced. I am desperate for any advice at this point. BTW, I'm the second owner so there is no service warranty.
