I am picking up a radio station from 500-600 miles away, what makes this possible?

I live in Sterling VA, (close to washington DC) and I am picking up an AM radio station (850AM) from Louisville Kentucky (over 500 miles away). It only works on one radio, and it comes in pretty clear. Is this normal? May there be some atmospheric phenomena helping the signal last that long?
