Do gifts tell you something about how people value you?

Get over it. This is materialism. Some people have a flair for choosing inexpensive but thoughtful gifts, just as some people can make a great meal out of simple ingredients -- but most people don't. Sometimes a nice gift is really meant to show how clever or extravagant the giver is. Look at the impulse behind the gift, and stop thinking that it's up to other people to make you happy. You're responsible for your own happiness.
