Japan is a seismically active area. They have small earthquakes frequently, and sometimes they experience larger earthquakes like today's. It's tragic, but it's not the first time this has happened. It has nothing to do Comet Elenin. In 1910, people were paranoid that the world would end when Halley’s comet made an approach. Of course, their fears were baseless. You’d think people would have gotten smarter by now, but apparently they haven’t.
