What's the significance of the very large crocheted "frik" kippot/yarmulkes?

I see people wearing them occasionally, but are they just a different type of kippot choice or is there some other meaning behind them? I know the Na Nach Breslovers wear those big white ones with the Na Nach mantra on them, so are they a Hasidic thing?
